If you’re someone who is obsessed with highlighting hair and maintaining that blond-bombshell effect, the chances are you’ve had the ongoing challenges of fading blonde, too much yellow appearance, dry hair, frizzy or fried ends – ALL of which come with their spikey little nuances.
We aim to give you a small insight to the world of purple shampoo and offer you some advice on how to combat those daily challenges of brassy tones…
What is Purple Shampoo?
Simply put – Purple shampoo is a purple-tinted shampoo specifically produced for customers with blonde, white or gray hair, used to tone or cover brassy or ‘yellowey’ type hair, causes can be damage with heat, product/mineral build up, sun damage, chlorine and/or other free-radicals and pollutants. It has been hugely successful as an ‘in-between’ salon visit re-fresher to combat colour fade and reducing unwanted brassy tones.
Should I be using purple shampoo?
There are several factors to consider – for discoloration caused by product buildup you do not NEED purple shampoo. You can remove it with a decent clarification shampoo, one that gently removes product build up. However, if you have a full head of silver or gray hair, or blonde hair that is turning brassy, you can try a purple shampoo in the short term to help combat the problem temporarily. If you have skin allergies, beware, it has a moderate potential to cause skin irritations if overused – can cause itchy and irritable scalp conditions and dry the hair and/or scalp. Most purple shampoos can potentially make your hair too dry. It’s designed to remove brassiness from your hair, but if used incorrectly they can leave a build-up on your hair strands and makes them brittle and dull.
How often should I use purple shampoo?
Not all purple shampoos are the same. Most should be used as a treatment and not to be used alone as an everyday shampoo or used to remove dirt from the hair. If you have this kind of issue, use your everyday clarifying cleansing shampoo first, then proceed to use the purple shampoo and condition as normal to avoid the hair being dried out. Our recommendation is to apply purple-silver shampoo once per week unless you are suffering severe colour fade.
If you are using purple shampoo more than twice a week then maybe you need to visit your stylist to refresh the colour and have a decent consultation about how to maintain that fabulous look!
